Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
