Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
